Content is why we have a website to begin with

- to showcase information we wish to share on the net. Once you have succeeded in bringing visitors to your site, mostly content decides if they stay or go elsewhere. Expert copywriting for web content will go a long way in tipping the balance.
You will still need to ADD, REVIEW and UPDATE your content on a regular basis to keep visitors interested. The "how-to" part is what bogs down otherwise great websites. Before we go into the management of it, let's consider what shape and form your content can take ...
There's no magic formula for having the right content. Much like trying to make a sumptuous cheesecake - the diversity in taste makes for interesting recipes, none of which will guarantee an audience without experimentation. So write it and tweak all you like!
Whilst you are at it, do take into account brevity, web-speak, SE friendliness, what format and the extended copy. Next, think about how it should be presented - the design interface. Then, work out which parts should have (indeed, require) updates. When you are done, brace yourself for some feedback and pick up the pen again. Practice makes perfect ... though it may be a while before you can say "c-h-e-e-s-e" !

If content is king, management is the throne - without which there's no kingdom.
In reality, not many of us have the time nor perhaps the expertise to manage our own sites on a regular basis. But this critical job needs to be done and whether you outsource or hire in-house webmasters, you need to address how it's being managed and be involved somehow.
Still intent on doing it yourself? CMS or content management systems attempt to bridge the divide and offer varying degrees of user-friendly solutions. If you can live with the boxy design, out-of-the-box systems could work for your site although some customization is usually required. Alternatively, budget permitting, you can opt to have one built from scratch with all the functions, look and feel you want.
