What makes Social Media tick?
Empowerment. Our very being is a contradiction in terms. We are social animals with a dire need to congregate, to mix, to party and hobnob. To not be like that is purportedly being "anti-social". At the same time, humanoids have a craving for attention, to stand out from the crowd, to be unique in some way!

Any medium that is fertile ground for these apparently conflicting desires should prosper and generate repeat interest. Factor in a free-for-all survival of the fittest challenge in a dynamic user matrix keeps the medium vigorously alive!

Users become members with a sense of belonging to the social media network site they choose to reside in. With the right tools at their disposal, members feel empowered to champion their own ideas within a competitive framework and be heard. This makes for a lot of buzz, fervent activity that can translate to marketing mileage.

It's no surprise that social media is the rave now and more and more companies are betting their advertising dollars on such networks. Whether you use it as a social bookmarking tool or as an ibranding medium, get interactive and ride the crest of this phenomenon as it unfolds!

Social Tic-Tac-Toe.
Did you know that MySpace alone delivered over 65 million unique visitors in February 2008?? And the top 25 social media networks 155 million unique visitors in all? And that does not include Flickr and YouTube which is another 60 million viewers. That's just one month.

Now here's a trend that calls for a "heads first" plunge! It's a 2-for-1 strategy. Take time off your SEO musings and start talking latte with your fellow commutes. This social journey offers you a chance to embed your site relevance within communities of like-minded folks who may be inspired to bookmark and share it with others - the viral effect is to say the least, fulfilling. The by-product of which is more "value" links and with that, a better ranking.

Hint: But remember, content is still king! So make sure your site is geared for the uptake before you act!

The thing about Paid Links.
The idea of "paid" links raised some eyebrows. Should it? When you need to compete for links of value so your site ranks well in searches based on algorithms that invented the need, "link buying" is a likely natural consequence.

But before you dive in, read this article from Google's Webmaster Central Blog. The mood (or controversy) is shifting, so keep tabs on the latest swings before committing that plunge. It might cost your site performance more than what you paid for 'em links!

Hint: when it comes to net trends, coming in second is not always a bad thing ;)
